Lucy Mulli Book ClubContemplating Greatness

Lucy Mulli

I started this book club in 2013. I had noticed that the people around me who led well were the people who read well, and that almost nobody was reading the books that taught the world how to think about justice, courage and the good life. So I asked a few of them to read one with me. We have not stopped.

I am an educator and a leadership facilitator, and I am completing a Doctor of Arts in the Humanities through a Great Books program, where my research is on the Great Ideas of Beauty, Virtue and Vice. I run three standing cohorts in Nairobi and open sessions anyone can join. Text Book Centre gave me its Penmanship Award, Book Club Champion. I have lectured at a private university and moderated at the Macondo Literary Festival.

The method is simple and old. One book, read properly, a month ahead. Notes and questions a week before. Then three hours around a table where I ask, the group answers, and we let the book answer back. It is a space where I invite you to gaze at greatness. The books are the teacher. I keep the conversation honest.
